Why Heat Pumps & Renewables Are Perfect for Scotland
Scotland has an extremely high resource base for renewable energy. The very things that come to mind when you think about the unpredictable Scottish weather – strong winds, lots of rain, and high tides – play a big part in providing significant, previously untapped sources.
So, it should come as no surprise that the country has focused on making the most of its renewable energy opportunities in an attempt to move away from its dependence on oil and gas. And when you combine renewable energy with the right technology to utilise it – heat pumps – you get a match made in heaven.
But what makes this synergy between heat pumps and renewable energy in Scotland so special?
At IS Plumbing & Heating, we truly believe renewables are the future of Scottish energy, which is why we decided to take a deep dive into this crucial topic.
Without further ado, let’s crack on!

Heat Pumps in Scotland
Heat pumps are highly efficient heating systems that extract renewable heat from the environment. There are two main types – air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps.
Both systems align with Scotland’s renewable energy goals of almost completely decarbonising the national energy system by 2050 by reducing reliance on fossil fuels for heating – one of the largest contributors to household emissions.
Supported by government incentives such as the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan – which offers funding of up to £7,500 for a new installation, with an additional £7,500 as an interest-free loan – heat pumps are a key technology in Scotland’s transition to a low-carbon, renewable energy future.

Types of Heat Pumps
Now that we know what role heat pumps are expected to play in Scotland’s long-term energy supply plans, let’s take a quick look at how the two types function:
Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) draw heat from the outside air, even in the cold Scottish climate, and transfer it indoors via a refrigerant cycle. They are relatively easy to install and suitable for most Scottish homes. A typical air source heat pump has a mind-blowing energy efficiency of 300%-400%, compared to only around 95% for a new gas boiler – a massive difference.
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), on the other hand, extract heat from the ground through buried pipes, providing more consistent performance year-round due to stable ground temperatures. Though GSHPs have higher upfront costs and require more space, they often offer superior efficiency and long-term savings.

Renewable Energy Sources in Scotland
As we mentioned in passing, much of Scotland’s renewable energy source base is a function of its specific geography and climate.
With that in mind, here are the main contributors:
Onshore & Offshore Wind Power
The fastest-growing renewable energy technology in Scotland, wind power has a long history dating back to the late 19th century. In fact, the wind turbine was invented by Scottish engineer James Blyth and fitted in his home in 1887.
In addition to a number of large onshore wind farms – such as Whitelee Wind Farm near Glasgow, the largest onshore wind farm in the whole of the UK with a total capacity of 539 MW; and Clyde Wind Farm in South Lanarkshire, which has a capacity of 522 MW – Scotland also has two offshore wind projects, with several more in the planning stage.

Hydroelectric Power
With a large annual rainfall, big lochs, and the highest mountains in the UK, Scotland is ideally suited for the large-scale production of hydroelectricity – perfect for heat pumps. Like wind power, hydroelectric generation in the country benefits from a long historical tradition that has its origins in the early 20th century.
By 1965, as many as 78 dams and 54 hydroelectric power stations had been constructed across Scotland. But that’s not all – new projects continue to be planned and developed to this day.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power
Given how cloudy Scotland typically is during much of the year, it’s highly unlikely to be the first place that springs to mind when you think of the best location for solar panels. However, that’s no longer the case. Whereas first-generation solar panels relied heavily on direct sunlight, later generations are capable of generating power from daylight, making them far more efficient.
What’s more, solar panels are ideally suited for being paired with heat pumps across Scotland – as we know from personal experience. At IS Plumbing, we recently caught up with one of our customers in Dalgety Bay for whom we installed an air source heat pump – and the results have been incredible.
Since adding solar panels and battery storage alongside his heat pump, this customer’s total electricity costs for the entire home – including heating, hot water, and day-to-day use – were averaging as little as £2 per month. Let that sink in for a minute.

Heat Pumps & Renewables in Scotland: The Stats
Still not convinced heat pumps and renewable energy are the way forward in Scotland? Check out some of our favourite statistics:
- As of late 2024, there were 36,000 heat pumps in Scotland, accounting for ca.1.4% of all dwellings. ASHPs made up the vast majority.
- In 2023, renewable technologies generated 113% of Scotland’s total electricity consumption in 2022.
- In Q2 2025, 8.1 TWh of renewable electricity was generated, the highest ever for Q2 in any year.
- In July 2025, there were 1,114 planned renewable energy projects with an estimated capacity of 76.5 GW.
