Grants and Funding for Air Source Heat Pumps in Scotland
Homeowners in Scotland can access significant financial support to make installing an air source heat pump more affordable. At I.S Plumbing & Heating, we guide you through the process to ensure you claim all the heat pump grant funding you’re entitled to.
At the most basic level, to qualify for the Home Energy Scotland Grant, you must live in your own home, and the installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer (which we are!). In addition, your installer must be a member of the Trading Standards Institute accredited consumer code, which I.S Plumbing & Heating also holds.
The grant provides up to £7,500 towards your new heat pump, with the possibility of an additional £7,500 as an interest-free loan, making the maximum total support £15,000. Homeowners in rural or island properties can receive a further £1,500 Rural Uplift, raising the maximum grant available to £9,000. Repayment periods for the loan vary depending on the amount, with five years for sums under £5,000, ten years for £5,000 to £9,999, and twelve years for amounts exceeding £10,000.
If your property is heated with electricity and you receive income-related benefits, you are very likely to qualify for a government grant.

The Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps with a Grant
Switching to an air source heat pump is a smart way to make your home more energy-efficient while taking advantage of available heat pump grants, which can help reduce the upfront costs compared to a traditional boiler. By combining grant funding with lower running costs, many homeowners find that heat pumps are not only better for the environment but also for their budget.
Air source heat pumps are an efficient way to heat your property, helping to reduce energy bills throughout the year. Unlike traditional boilers, some air source heat pumps like the ‘air to air heat pumps‘ can also provide cooling in the warmer months, giving you a comfortable home all year round. In addition, heat pumps typically last between 20 and 25 years, which is considerably longer than the 10 to 15-year lifespan of a standard boiler. This longevity, combined with government funding, makes them a smart long-term investment.
Air source heat pumps provide a complete heating solution for modern homes. They can be paired with underfloor heating, radiators, or hot water cylinders, making them highly versatile and compatible with a wide range of property types. Finally, air source heat pumps use renewable energy, which makes them a much greener choice, reducing your household carbon footprint while taking advantage of financial support from heat pump grants to make the transition more affordable.

Heat Pump Questions Answered (FAQs): Cost, Performance and Peace of Mind!
At I.S Plumbing & Heating, we know that deciding to install a heat pump can feel daunting. Many homeowners worry about upfront costs, performance in cold weather, noise, and disruption during installation. Below, we’ve answered the most common concerns and explained how grant funding and professional installation make the process easier.
If you have any other questions, contact us. You can call us on 01383 881236, email us at [email protected] or fill out our Contact Form.
How Much Will a Heat Pump Cost, and Can Grants Help?
We understand cost is a major concern. The upfront price of a heat pump can be higher than a traditional boiler setup, but the available grant (up to £9,000) can significantly reduce the initial investment. Combined with lower running costs, many homeowners find that heat pumps quickly pay for themselves compared to gas or oil systems.
Will My Heat Pump Make Noise?
Air source heat pumps are designed to operate quietly. Typical sound levels range between 55–60dB, roughly equivalent to a normal conversation. Careful placement around the property, along with modern inverter technology, ensures minimal disruption to your household.
My Home Isn't New, Can I Still Have a New Heat Pump?
Yes, you can. I.S Plumbing & Heating specialises in retrofitting air source heat pumps to existing properties. A typical installation is carefully planned to minimise disruption, usually taking around one week, and we’ll guide you through grant applications to make the process as affordable as possible.
What About Rising Electricity Prices?
Heat pumps are highly efficient, converting electricity into multiple times that in heat. Even if electricity costs rise, most households see long-term savings compared to gas or oil systems. When combined with grant funding, the upfront cost is reduced, making heat pumps a smart, future-proof investment.
Are Heat Pumps Reliable and Low Maintenance?
Yes! Modern heat pumps are extremely reliable when installed correctly. They require minimal maintenance, often less than traditional boilers, and with I.S Plumbing & Heating’s MCS-certified installation, you have both a high-quality system and grant-backed reassurance.
Will the Heat Pump Manage a Cold Scottish Winter?
Absolutely! High-quality heat pumps can efficiently provide heat at temperatures as low as -20°C. This means even during the coldest Scottish winters, your home will stay warm, and with grant support, you can do so without worrying about upfront cost.
How Much Space Do I Need for a Heat Pump?
Air source heat pumps are compact and flexible in terms of placement. The outdoor unit is usually installed to the side or back of your property, out of the way but easily accessible for maintenance. Grant eligibility is not affected by placement, so we help you find a location that works best for your home.
Will Installation Be Messy or Disruptive?
Our MCS-certified engineers plan every installation to minimise disruption. While a week-long installation is typical, most of the work is contained and organised so your home stays as normal as possible.
